Nineteen people joined yesterday’s Community Rail Walk on the Fylde – a good turnout considering the day’s forecast wasn’t favourable. January 6th

What a glorious day for a walk! The twenty nine people who joined today’s walks enjoyed a beautiful, crisp and clear day with great views all round and good fellowship to boot. We also welcomed a few of new faces. Surprisingly, given the recent rains the going wasn’t too bad. Lots of other walkers were out and about too. All told a very enjoyable day was had by everyone.

January 2nd

Now that the Christmas and New Year festivities are out of the way it’s time to think of all the adventures we can share in the coming year. We have a varied programme of Rail Rambler destinations and walks in the coming year starting with our traditional visit to Hebden Bridge on January 6th – always a popular trip as our supporters welcome the opportunity to get out and about again. Both walks explore the countryside surrounding Hardcastle Crags with its open moorlands and wooded valleys and, what’s more, the weather forecast is for cold, crisp and dry weather so no excuses for not putting on your walking boots and joining us. Later in January we make a visit to the Fylde Coast and follow the Wyre Way on good surfaces just in case the wet conditions return. On this walk we all walk together as one party but with opportunities to leave the group after six or seven miles and catch a bus or tram back to Blackpool. In the next six months we’ll be travelling to the South Lakes, to the sandstone bluffs around Frodsham and Helsby, exploring Manchester’s hidden history and countryside and taking a safari through Liverpool’s green spaces. In April too we’ll be meeting up with our friends in the Welsh Rail Rambles’ Group for joint walks in the Chester area followed in May with a scenic ride up the Cumbrian Coast and a walk along the cliffs to Whitehaven – just some of great trips and walking possibilities on offer through to June. And, of course we also have our programme of Community Rail Walks from our local rail lines and in the coming months we should be receiving that important news about the service from Lancashire to the Dales. Let’s hope it is good news. Hope to see you all soon!

January 1st

We wish all our supporters and friends a happy, healthy and active New Year. Let’s hope we have a cancellation fee year and lots of dry days.

2023

December 28th

Northern are holding a ticket sale from January 3rd with £1 tickets on some routes and other cheap fare on others. Look out for announcements on Northern’s website.

December 20th

2023 has been a year of mixed fortunes for Lancashire Rail Ramblers. Seven Rail Rambler trips were cancelled due to rail strikes or train cancellations but support for those that did run was very encouraging. Our best supported trip was to Bronte Country in April when thirty people turned out and most of our other trips were well supported. In February we heard that the DalesRail service wouldn’t be running this year. This was very disappointing and our thanks go to all who sent in complaints to Northern about their decision. Our Community Rail Walks’ programme also suffered from cancellations and, as a result, fluctuations in numbers on the walks that did take place. As always, those supporters who joined our walks enjoyed good company, fresh air and new discoveries along the way. Our thanks go to all who turned out and to our indefatigable leaders who recce and lead our walks across NW England. Perhaps we’ll see more people join our walks in 2024 as we have lots of interesting destinations to explore – more about these later! In the meantime, we send season’s greetings to all our friends and supporters.

December 18th

Twenty three people joined last Saturday’s walk at Parbold. The weather was perfect with calm, clear and sunny conditions. We had lunch at Ashurst Beacon where there were distant views across Mersyside to the Welsh Hills, Snowdonia and even down to the Shopshire Hills. From there we descended by fieldpaths with more great views to Winter Hill and across Gtr Manchester to The Peak District. We passed round the extensive derelict buildings of what was St Joseph’s Catholic Seminary built it in 1880 but closed in the early 1990’s and left to decay. We dropped down to Gathurst Station through the wooded clough of Dean Wood for our return train. A lovely pre-Christmas walk. See some photos on the Lancashire Rail Ramblers Facebook page.

December 15th

It is with much sadness that we have received the news that former leader and committee member, Eric Urmston has died at the age of 83 years. Eric was an enthusiastic supporter of our group from way back in the days of the Rail Rambler excursions and he and his wife, Alison, led DalesRail walks for many years. Eric’s funeral will take place at Croft Parish Church, Lady Lane, Croft at 11.00 on Thursday, December 28th. Our thoughts and sympathy are with Alison and the family at this sad time.

December 8th

Our final Rail Rambler of 2023 takes place next Saturday, December 16th when we travel to Parbold in the Douglas Valley. There will be one walk – a 7 miles’ moderately easy – so that we can all walk and enjoy the day together. The walk will be led by Graham McLeod who lives locally and starts at 10.05 after the arrival of the train from Wigan. On the walk we’ll climb steadily to the local landmark of Ashurst Beacon where, on a clear day, there are panoramic views across the Lancashire Plain and across Merseyside to the Welsh Mountains. Come and join us for some fresh air, exercise and good fellowship.

December 2nd

We invite you to join our next Community Rail Walk which takes place this coming Tuesday, December 5th when we’ll meet at Pleasington Station at 10.44 following the arrival of trains from Preston and Colne/Blackburn. The 7.5 miles’ walk takes in the open countryside of woodlands and reservoirs of the Roddlesworth Valley before climbing up to Darwen Tower and descending into Darwen via the beautiful Bold Venture Park. Book a Day Return to either Pleasington or Darwen whichever is the further station from your starting point. Your leader, John Barnes, will meet you at Pleasington Station.

November 22nd

Because of the uncertainty surrounding train cancellations resulting from the train drivers’ overtime ban on December 2nd, we have decided to cancel the Rail Rambler to Carnforth/Arnside on that date. The fact that there aren’t any bus services out of Arnside towards Lancaster also adds to the uncertainty. However, we have walks on November 25th, December 5th and December 16th to enjoy.

November 20th

If walking across muddy fields isn’t your thing our next Community Rail Walk starting from Bamber Bridge Sta at 09.51 this Saturday(25th) is ideal for you. Much of the walk is on surfaced paths and canal towpaths passing through the Cuerden Valley Park and the towpath of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Although the advertised walk is 11 miles it will be possible to catch a bus to either Blackburn or Chorley at Wheelton or Higher Wheelton after 6.5 miles. Full details of the route can be found on the relevant page of this website.

November 19th

Despite a lack of trains in NE Lancs and a wet start, fourteen people turned up for our two walks. The C Party undertook their walk from Bentham but the E Party decided, in view of the wet conditions underfoot, to walk the old railway track to Glasson Dock and on towards Galgate along the canal towpath.

November 16th

STOP PRESS! Please note that there aren’t any trains between Colne, Accrington, Blackburn, Clitheroe & Preston this Saturday when we have our Rail Rambler to the Wenning Valley. As alternatives there are Rail Replacement buses or drive and park in Preston. Tip: Parking behind County Hall in Preston (Arthur St)costs £4 for the day – cash or text.

The final image below (for now) shows leader, David Pryer, in appropriate pose in Stockport at the sart of our walk.

October 6th

Please note two changes to our Rail Rambler on October 14th. Firstly, the E Walk (Town Tour) is cancelled as the leader, Stuart Leese, is unavailable and, secondly, the departure from M/c Piccadilly has changed as follows: we shall be catching the 09.51 Buxton train to Stockport NOT the 09.48 Sheffield train which doesn’t call at Stockport. Many walkers regard Easter as the start of the rambling year and with this in mind our next Rail Rambler takes place on Easter Saturday, April 8th with a train ride to Hebden Bridge and the scenic bus ride ‘over the tops’ towards the Worth Valley. The longer walk starts in Haworth itself and heads over the Bronte Moors back to Hebden Bridge whilst the shorter walk starts on the tops and keeps to the heights before descending into the Worth Valley at Oxenhope and follows The Railway Children’s Path into Haworth for the return bus to Hebden Bridge. The weather forecast looks good and the views should be distant in all directions. Leave the car at home and come and join us for these excellent walks in the company of friendly folk. The following article has appeared in today’s edition of the Lancashire Telegraph:

After appealing to users of the DalesRail service to write to Northern and /or MP’s etc to complain about the withdrawal of the service, correspondence from Northern and the Department of Transport has been received assuring us that the service is only suspended for the current year and that it will return in some form in 2024. Just what that provision will be and on what days it will run will depend upon the outcome of a study being undertaken by Lancashire County Council, Northern, the Community Rail Partnership and other bodies. The provision will also be affected by the outcome of the negotiations with the rail unions about Sundays being a rest day. So, thank you to all who responded to the appeal. We are sure the powers that be realised that the DalesRail service is greatly valued and is a more environmentally friendly way to reach the countryside than the car.

March 24th

Just a reminder that we have a Community Rail Walk tomorrow from Brierfield to Clitheroe – a 10 miles strenuous starting out from Brierfield at 10.23 after the arrival of the train from Preston. See the relevant page for the route etc.

We have been informed that Northern have decided to withdraw the popular Lancashire DalesRail service this year. We believe this is a very poor decision flying in the face of government policies aimed at encouraging people to use public transport to reach the countryside and the pursuit of green initiatives. The service has been running since 1975 and in that time has carried tens of thousands of walkers and day trippers to the Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley. Of course we will be fighting to overturn this shortsighted decision and will be seeking your support. Watch this space!

January 30th

Our next Rail Rambler is this coming Saturday, February 4th when we take a scenic train ride round the Furness Peninsula to the old market town of Ulverston. Our walks are in the rolling landscapes to the north and south of the town. There’s lots of interest on both walks from a lighthouse that isn’t, a historic hall where the founder of the Quakers lived, a prehistoric fort, a village where the oldest Northerner lived, a stone circle, Gothic masterpece, Buddhist temple, two tarns and a ropewalk. All this plus fresh air, exercise, friendly company and, hopefully, great views. What more could wish for? Hope you can join us! Visit the relevant page of this website for full details.

It is with much sadness that we have learnt of the death of one of our leaders, Aidan Turner Bishop. He was suffering from cancer in the past year. Aidan was a familiar figure on DalesRail from which he led numerous town tours for us. He was a quiet, unassuming person with a deep knowledge of many things having been a librarian at Lancaster University. Over the years he developed an in-depth knowledge of the history of Carlisle inluding many obscure but fascinating facts. He wasa thoughtful, kind and generous person who will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Perhaps a future destination for a Rail Rambler? We’ve already had a couple of walks out from Wigan up the famous ‘Wigan Flight’ – the twenty-three locks on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal – to the extensive Haigh Country Park which drops back into the town centre so here’s another possibility. And this year one of our walks from Irlam included Pennington Flash.

September 3rd

After what seems a lengthy gap in August, September has three non-DalelesRail walks on offer on which to stretch your legs. Our first trip is a Community Rail Walk and the next in the series of ‘In the Footsteps of Jessica Lofthouse’ with an 8 miles easy walk starting from Clitheroe on Tuesday, September 6th. On September 17th we have a Rail Rambler to Disley with two walks following sections of the Gritstone Trail and visiting the beautiful Lyme Park. And our third trip of September on Saturday 24th is a longer Community Rail Walk centered on the countryside around Todmorden. So with these walks and the last two DalesRails of the season walkers have plenty of oppurtunity to enjoy the fresh air and scenery of NW England. For full details of the three walks above visit the relevant pages of this website.

Pat Parrott’s funeral will take place at 11.00 at Trinity Church, Clitheroe on Wednesday, September 14th.

August 31st

We have received the sad news that ex-leader Pat Parrott has died at the age of 94 years. Pat was a DalesRail leader in the early years of the service back in the 1970’s as she and her husband, Frank, also a leader, were both volunteer Yorkshire Dales National Park Wardens and they organised the guided walks from the trains. After Frank’s death Pat continued to lead DalesRail walks for our organisation and did so into her 80’s. In fact we had a special celebration of her 80th birthday on a DalesRail train. Pat was also very much involved with the work of the Ramblers’ Association and was Footpath Secretary for Clitheroe Ramblers for many years working tirelessly to ensure that the local public footpath network was kept open and used.

August 29th

Yesterday’s DalesRail was well supported and had a great atmosphere. The guided walks went well and the weather stayed fine despite some threatening skies. Let’s hope that the train runs again next week. Photos of yesterday’s walks can be found on the Lancashire Rail Ramblers Facebook page.

August 26th

The DalesRail train will run this coming Sunday(28th) with a coach link into Wensleydale from Ribblehead where the guided walks will take place. Full details at: dalesrail.com The coach fare will be £3 and tickets sold on the train.

To add to this year’s disappointing DalesRail season there is a strong possibility that next Sunday’s (31st) service will be cancelled as there is a rail strike the day before. However, if the DalesRail train does run we have put in place three guided walks from it as follows:

On Saturday(2nd) we have a Rail Rambler to Newhey with two walks giving the opportunity to explore the green moorland fringes and reservoirs east of Rochdale – a popular walking area for locals. And on Sunday we are hoping that the DalesRail train will run with four walks from the train at Dent, Horton, Langwathby and Carlisle. So – plenty of walking opportunities on offer!

All’s well that ends well is probably the best way to describe yesterday’s Dalesrail. Emergency tunnel works north of Garsdale saw our train terminating at Hellifield. Despite the last minute termination, a group of determined supporters turned out and had an enjoyable day thanks to leaders on board planning an alternative walk to Settle via Scaleber Force and Attermire Scars. They even managed to call in the village hall at Langcliffe for tea and cakes.

Apologies to all those who intended to join the RR today and didn’t turn out because of the message below written at 06.50 when all trains had been cancelled because a signaller had been take ill on the way to work at Preston Signalling Centre. By 07.45 some trains were running but the Hebden Bridge train was still shown as cancelled only to be reinstated a little later by which time it was too late for many to get to their stations to join the train. For those who did turn up and make it to Hebden Bridge we hope something of the day was salvaged and a guided walk provided. Thanks to David Pryer for organising a walk.

The link below to an article in today’s Guardian about walking a new section of the England Coast Path south of Whitehaven reminds me that Rail Ramblers have walked the beautiful clifftop section to St Bees on many occasions. Our last visit was in April 2019 when a large group of us enjoyed a gloriously sunny day up there. When we ran the Rail Rambler excursion trains back in the 1970’s and 80’s a trip up the Cumbrian Coast was an almost annual event. If you haven’t made the trip around the Cumbrian Coast you should as it’s one of the UK’s most scenic train journeys

Aidan Turner Bishop will lead a town tour on his home turf – Preston and as a local historian will have lots of interesting nooks and crannies to visit with fascinating facts to relate. For those who want a more energetic day out our second walk starts at Bamber Bridge Station and follows the course of the old East Lancashire Railway into Preston, crosses the River Ribble and then follows the Ribble Way through Avenham Park to Brockholes Nature Reserve and up through the woods to the Grimsargh road for the bus back into Preston.
